The process begins with a quality reference photo of your subject. It must be exceptionally clear and really look like the person.

charcoal sketch on canvas |
A charcoal sketch is completed. Achieving a realistic likeness is the essential goal at this point. If a more complex background, such as the addition of this woman's family cottage is desired, it can be sketched into your painting at this point.

initial layering of shadows and colors |
Next, initial background colors are begun. Layers are placed to obtain a dimensional effect. The painting of the figure is also begun with subtle layering for shadows and skin tones. This part of the painting process then continues with several sessions of additional layering of paint.

completed portrait |
In your completed portrait, everything comes together to convey the personality of the subject. That certain look, the way she smiled, a very comfortable beach hat...everything combines to say this is definitely her and she looks just like she did down at the cottage.
